The 5th Commandment (Video Poem)

(Original script of The 5thC performed as part of
the 10Cs immersive play by Metanoia Theatre)

ACT 1: HAPPENING-3 (DIALOGUE)

Kylie: "Czcij ojca swego i matkę swoją,
aby długo trwały twoje dni w ziemi,
którą Pan, Bóg twój da tobie."

rVb: “Honor your father and your mother,
that your days may be long in the land
that the LORD your God is giving you."

Kylie: The gravity of these words is pregnant,
pregnant with unspoken meaning.
God insinuates,
insinuates "a perfect family"

(Kylie points at rVb, herself, a baby cot, and then to "God")

"a man"
"a woman"
and
"a child"
to honor them,
and they should obey,
obey God.

rVb: God's design is “a perfection”,
a promise of a long life
for those who obey.
The rest of us are locked,
locked outside with a promise,
a promise of suffering
a hundred painted Hells
glistening inescapable,
unless we repent.
I will not.

(directed to audience, Kylie repeats rVb's questions)

Will you ? Will you ? Will You ?

(directed to Kylie)

Will you ?

Kylie: I do not wish to obey,
obey God.
I think God is Me

(directed to rVb)

and perhaps you,

(directed to audience)

and you and you and you

I do not want to believe,
believe in God.
I want you to believe,
believe in I.

I was once a child.
I was once a father.
I have a child.
I am a mother now.
I am like God.
I am three things at once.

rVb: I want to interrogate,
interrogate God,
interrogate his "perfect" design.
I have so many questions.
Will he answer me ?

(directed to audience, Kylie repeats rVb's questions)

Will you ? Will you ? Will You ?

(directed to Kylie)

Will you ?

Kylie: Do we have a right,
a right to choose,
choose who we want to be ?

rVb: Do we have a right,
a right to choose,
choose how we want to live ?

Kylie: Do we have a right,
a right to choose
choose our mother, our father ?

rVb: Do we have to honor,
honor our mother, our father ?
Or perhaps, they should first,
first earn our trust.
If we must honor,
honor our mother, our father,
we carry the weight
of their capacity for shame,
we carry the infliction
of their expectations.
If we must honor,
honor our mother, our father,
we must respect,
but to honor is not,
not the same as to respect.

Kylie: Are we ? We locked,
locked outside,
outside God's "perfect" design,
are we a threat,
a threat to the sanctity,
sanctity of this unified vision,
vision of
God and Evil,
Right and Wrong,
White and Black,
One and Zero.
Will we question ? Are we a question ?

(directed to audience, rVb repeats Kylie's questions)
Are you ? Are you ? Are you ?
(directed to rVb)
Are you a question ?

rVb: A question never asked.
A question translated inconsistently
through a twisted and bloody history.
The language is unbalanced
and we may never,
nonever speak a truer word
than with these, our borrowed tongues.
What if everything is an act,
an act of failing.
Will we question ? Are we a question ?

(directed to audience, Kylie repeats rVb's question)
Are you ? Are you ? Are you ?
(directed to Kylie)
Are you a question ?

Kylie: A question never asked.
Do we have a right,
a right to choose,
choose who we want to be ?
Are we ? We locked,
locked outside,
outside God's "perfect" design,
are we a threat ?
A threat to a definition,
definition of what it is
to be human ?
Will we question? Are we a question?

(directed to audience, rVb repeats Kylie's question)
Are you ? Are you ? Are you ?
(directed to rVb)
Are you a question ?

rVb: A question never asked ?
Do we have a right,
a right to choose,
choose how we want to live ?
I was once a child, but
I will never,
nonever choose the most common of miracles,
nonever the flesh and blood tether
of birthing one.
After all, I would never,
nonever wish to become
born again.

(directed to Kylie)
What about you ?

Kylie: I was once a child.
I was once a father.
I have a child.
I am a mother now.
My body an entire text
I have read, lived and re-translated.
If I can be identified and re-identified
in every letter of the cellular,
cellular alphabet,

(directed to rVb)
so can you.

rVb: The gravity of these words is pregnant,
pregnant with unspoken meaning.
God insinuates
"a perfect family

(rVb points to herself, to Kylie, a baby cot)

"a man"
"a woman"
and
"a child",

(directed to Kylie)

and
"honor".

Kylie: Honor is not inflicted
or carried to term
on your own terms,
but held,
held within each of them,
held within each part,
each part of I

(directed to rVb)

and you.

rVb: In the “woman”.
In the “man”.
In the “child”.
In the "act" of being.
In the gravity of these words
nothing more,
nothing more than
roles, names, meanings, moments,
moments unfixed,
moments unlinked,
as we are shining

(Kylie & rVb speak next 3 lines together)

Kylie & rVb
shining,
shining against,
against

Kylie: against the eyelids
of the fearful suffering,
staring at a hundred,
a hundred painted hells,
glistening inescapable,
telling us to repent.
I will not.

(directed to audience, rVb repeats Kylie's questions)

Will you ? Will you ? Will you ?

(directed to rVb)

Will you ?

rVb: I will not.

(directed to Kylie)
Will you ?

Kylie I will not.

(rVb and Kylie together directed to audience)

Kylie&rVb Will you ? Will you ? Will you ?

(Kylie and rVb speak next two verses together directed to audience.
rVb starts first.)

rVb: Will you ?

“Honor your father and your mother,
that your days may be long in the land
that the LORD your God is giving you."

No. I will not.
Will you ? Will You Will you ?

Kylie: Czy ty bediesz ?

"Czcil ojca swego i matkę swoją,
aby długo trwały twoje dni w ziemi,
którą Pan, Bóg twój da tobie."

Nie. Nie będę.
Czy ty będiesz ? Czy ty będiesz ? Czy ty będiesz ?

(rVb and Kylie ask each other and answer, without waiting for a response.
The lines get repeated faster and faster until Kylie says stop.)

rVb: Will you ?

Kylie: Nie. Nie będę.
Czy ty będiesz ?

rVb: No. I will not.
Will you ?

Kylie: Nie. Nie będę.
Czy ty będiesz ?

.........

Kylie: Stop !

(rVb walks away from Kylie to the audience space. Kylie says next
lines sounding like calling for rVb to come back.)

Kylie: Stop ! Stop ! Stop !
